Restoring Dignity and Learning for Tribal Children
Katukapalli
Where is Katukapalli — and why it matters
Katukapalli is a remote tribal village in Andhra Pradesh, home to indigenous communities who have lived close to forests and far from public services for generations. The village and surrounding hamlets are geographically isolated, with limited access to quality education, healthcare, sanitation, and safe living conditions.
Most families depend on subsistence agriculture, forest produce, and daily wage labour. Poverty here is intergenerational. Children often grow up facing malnutrition, health risks, unsafe housing, and disrupted schooling — not due to lack of ability, but due to lack of access.
Katukapalli matters because it represents many tribal communities where education cannot succeed unless dignity, health, and basic living conditions are addressed first.

How the Jesuit Mission Began in Katukapalli
The Jesuit engagement in Katukapalli emerged through a deep listening to tribal realities. Over time, it became clear that short-term aid or classroom-only interventions would not work in such a context.
To respond holistically, the Jesuits, through the Loyola Integrated Tribal Development Society (LITDS), began accompanying tribal families and children with a long-term vision — one that integrated education, residential care, health, and community support.
The mission here was shaped as an accompaniment model, rooted in trust and continuity, rather than charity.
What we have done
The mission at Katukapalli focused first on creating a safe and stable residential learning environment for tribal children from Katukapalli and nearby villages.
By addressing shelter, nutrition, discipline, and education together, the mission ensured that children who would otherwise drop out of school could remain in learning spaces that respected their dignity and culture.

What is happening today
Today, Katukapalli supports nearly 350 tribal children through a residential education model.
For these children, the campus is more than a school or hostel. It is:
A place of safety and belonging
A space to rest, learn, and grow
A foundation for confidence and aspiration
However, critical infrastructure needs remain — especially those that affect health, hygiene, and daily dignity, such as restrooms, beds, and dining facilities.
Choose Katukapalli. Stand With Tribal Children.
When you choose to support Katukapalli, you are choosing to:
Restore dignity before opportunity
Support tribal children beyond the classroom
Invest in education that is backed by care and safety

Inspired by faith, JPS nurtures knowledge, values, and leadership. Together, we shape a society that is just, inclusive, and empowered.
