The Constitutions

The Constitutions

of the Society of Jesus

The Constitutions of the Society of Jesus form the foundational guide for Jesuit life, mission, and governance. Written by St Ignatius of Loyola, in collaboration with his companions—most notably Juan de Polanco—the Constitutions emerged over several years following the Society’s establishment in Rome. They reflect Ignatius’ deep trust in God’s ongoing guidance, combined with a practical understanding of the need for structure to sustain a global mission. Rather than a rigid rulebook, the Constitutions are a living spiritual and organizational framework. They help the Society remain rooted in faith while responding creatively and responsibly to the changing needs of the world.

Understanding the Ten Parts of the Constitutions

The Constitutions are organized into ten parts, which together trace the full journey of Jesuit life—from initial discernment to lifelong mission, leadership, and renewal.

1. Discernment and Formation

(Parts I–V)

The first five parts focus on vocation, formation, and incorporation into the Society. They guide how a person is invited, tested, formed, and eventually committed to Jesuit life through vows. These sections emphasize careful discernment, spiritual grounding, intellectual preparation, and readiness for mission, ensuring that each Jesuit is deeply rooted in faith and service before being sent into the world.

2. Life in Mission

(Parts VI–VII)

Once incorporated, the Constitutions turn toward the lived reality of Jesuit life. These parts describe how Jesuits are called to live their vows, sustain personal and community discipline, and engage in apostolic ministries. Central here is the idea of being sent—available for mission wherever the need is greatest—whether in education, pastoral work, social justice, intellectual engagement, or accompaniment of the marginalized.

3. Unity, Governance, and Sustainability

(Parts VIII–X)

The final sections address how the Society remains united, well-governed, and future-oriented. They outline structures of leadership, decision-making, and shared responsibility, ensuring unity of purpose across cultures and regions. These parts also focus on preserving the spirit of the Society and enabling its continued growth, adaptability, and fidelity to its mission across generations.

A Living Guide for Faith in Action

Taken together, the ten parts of the Constitutions form a dynamic roadmap—one that balances spiritual freedom with responsible structure. They allow the Society of Jesus to remain deeply contemplative while fully engaged in action, constantly discerning how best to serve God and humanity.

For Jesuits and collaborators alike, the Constitutions continue to inspire a way of proceeding that is faith-filled, mission-driven, and responsive to the signs of the times.
