A Living Parish at the Heart of Konaseema
Amalapuram
Where is Amalapuram — and why it matters
Amalapuram is located in the Konaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, a land shaped by rivers, fertile fields, and closely connected village communities. Often described as the “rice bowl” of the state, Konaseema appears prosperous on the surface, yet many families continue to live with economic vulnerability, seasonal uncertainty, and limited safety nets.
Agriculture and allied livelihoods sustain most households, but income remains fragile. Health emergencies, crop loss, migration, and old age often push families into distress. For the poor, the elderly, and daily wage earners, dignity and security cannot be assumed.
In this context, Amalapuram is not just a town — it is a regional anchor, where faith, community life, and collective responsibility come together. When this parish is strong, the surrounding communities are strengthened as well.

How the Jesuit Mission Began in Amalapuram
The Immaculate Conception Parish, Amalapuram, was established in 1953, and over the decades it grew steadily as a centre of faith for the Konaseema region.
In 2001, the parish was entrusted to the Jesuits, marking a new chapter in its journey. As the Catholic population increased and pastoral responsibilities expanded, the Jesuits responded by strengthening both spiritual life and community structures.
Recognising the growing needs of the faithful, a new church building was constructed and inaugurated in 2008, creating a space that could serve not only the parish, but also the wider vicariate.
From this point onward, Amalapuram began to emerge as a regional hub — not only for worship, but for shared faith, solidarity, and service.
What we have done
Over the years, the mission at Amalapuram focused on building a vibrant parish rooted in participation and compassion. Lay leadership was encouraged, faith-based groups were strengthened, and the parish became a centre for regional gatherings such as the Konaseema Way of the Cross, uniting faithful from multiple parishes.
The mission also placed strong emphasis on practical charity — responding to sickness, accidents, death, crop loss, and emergencies with dignity and care.
