Walking with a Community Through Faith, Education, and Dignity
Darsi
Where is Darsi — and why does it matter?
Darsi is a semi-rural town in Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh, surrounded by small villages, hamlets, and tribal settlements. Agriculture is the backbone of life here, yet it is also the source of vulnerability. Erratic rainfall, land insecurity, limited access to quality education, and poor healthcare continue to shape everyday realities.
Most families here live on daily wages or small farming incomes. Migration, school dropouts, and preventable health issues are common. For young people, opportunities are few; for women and children, safety and access remain fragile.
Yet, Darsi is also a place of deep resilience. Communities are close-knit. Faith is lived collectively. When support arrives with dignity and consistency, lives do change.
This is the soil where our mission took root.

A Journey That Began in 1974
The Darsi Mission began in January 1974, when it was still a substation of Donakonda Parish. In the same year, it became a full-fledged parish, and the Jesuits took responsibility for accompanying this community.
From the very beginning, the mission was never limited to religious services alone. The Jesuit presence in Darsi grew as a response to the lived realities of the people — their struggles for land, education, health, and human dignity.
Over the decades, Jesuits lived among the people, listened to them, stood with them during conflicts, and slowly built trust. Small chapels became spaces of community. Faith formation went hand in hand with social action. Schools, hostels, houses, and roads followed.
Each phase of the mission added a new layer — pastoral care, education, social development, and advocacy for the most vulnerable.
Responding to the Signs of the Time
As the realities of Darsi evolved, so did the mission.
When education gaps became evident, a High School was started in 1999 to ensure that children from poor families could access quality learning close to home. Later, a Junior College and Boarding facilities were added, allowing first-generation learners to continue their education safely.
When health challenges emerged — including the threat of HIV/AIDS in the early 2000s — the mission responded with courage. Awareness campaigns, street plays, student-led outreach, and healthcare services were introduced at a time when fear and stigma were widespread. These initiatives helped the community talk openly, learn, and protect itself.
At every stage, the mission chose presence over charity and empowerment over dependency.

What Is Happening in Darsi Today
Today, Darsi Mission is a multi-dimensional presence in the lives of people:
Children from vulnerable families access education through Jesuit-run institutions
Boys and girls from remote villages stay in boarding facilities that offer safety, discipline, and care
Youth are supported through formation, values-based education, and community engagement
Pastoral services continue across substations, strengthening faith and community bonds
Healthcare awareness and support remain a key concern
The mission today stands on the shoulders of decades of trust built with the community.
But the needs continue.
