Safeguarding Faith, Land, and Dignity in Rural Andhra

Krishnapuram

Where is Krishnapuram — and why it matters

Krishnapuram is a rural community in Andhra Pradesh, surrounded by small agrarian villages where life is deeply dependent on land, seasonal agriculture, and daily wage labour. Families here live close to the soil — both its promise and its risks.

For many households, land is the only source of livelihood, security, and identity. Yet marginal farmers, Dalit families, and vulnerable communities often face economic pressure, land insecurity, and social marginalisation. Limited access to legal support, education, and stable income makes families especially vulnerable during droughts, crop loss, or conflict.

Krishnapuram represents thousands of such rural communities where one crisis can undo generations of effort — and where steady accompaniment can protect dignity and hope.

How the Jesuit Mission Began in Krishnapuram

The Jesuit presence in Krishnapuram grew out of close pastoral engagement with rural families who needed more than occasional support.

As the Jesuits accompanied the people, it became clear that faith formation could not be separated from people’s lived struggles — especially issues related to land, livelihood, and social justice. Families needed someone to walk with them consistently, to listen, to stand with them in moments of fear and conflict.

The mission here took shape not through large institutions, but through presence — living among the people, understanding their realities, and becoming a trusted moral and pastoral anchor in the community.

What we have done

From the beginning, the mission in Krishnapuram focused on integrating faith with justice and community strength. Jesuits and parish collaborators stood with vulnerable families, supported community cohesion, and helped people navigate moments of crisis with courage and clarity.

Pastoral care extended beyond worship into daily life — especially when families faced land disputes, economic pressure, or social exclusion.

What is happening today

Today, Krishnapuram Parish continues to serve as a centre of faith, reassurance, and accompaniment for surrounding villages.

  • Regular pastoral visits and worship sustain spiritual life

  • Faith formation and catechesis strengthen community bonds

  • Youth are encouraged to grow with responsibility and resilience

  • Vulnerable families find support during moments of distress

The parish remains a trusted presence in a context where institutional support is often distant.
