How the Jesuit Mission Began in Nagarjuna Nagar
The Jesuit presence in Nagarjuna Nagar began in 1979, when land was acquired with a clear vision: to create a space dedicated to spiritual formation and renewal for the Church in the region.
In 1981, a Retreat House was inaugurated, and in 1982, the Jesuit Novitiate was formally established. This marked the birth of Anand Jyothi, a centre that would go on to shape generations of Jesuits and lay collaborators.
From the beginning, the mission here was intentionally inward-facing — preparing people for lives of outward service.
What we have done
At Nagarjuna Nagar, the Jesuits established a formation environment where young men entering religious life were accompanied through prayer, discipline, reflection, and exposure to social realities.
Formation here was holistic. Alongside spiritual grounding, novices were sent for experiences in hospitals, villages, and social service centres — ensuring that reflection and action shaped each other.
The Retreat and Renewal Centre also opened its doors to lay leaders, clergy, religious congregations, NGOs, and individuals seeking renewal, silence, and clarity.
