Where is Nallapadu — and why it matters
Nallapadu is located on the outskirts of Guntur city, Andhra Pradesh, a space where urban growth meets informal settlements and migrant neighbourhoods. Many families here are migrant workers, daily wage earners, construction labourers, domestic workers, and informal-sector employees.
Housing is often temporary. Employment is unstable. Access to quality education, healthcare, and social security remains fragile. Children’s schooling is frequently disrupted as families move in search of work.
Nallapadu matters because it represents thousands of urban-edge communities that live one step away from instability — often invisible in the city’s growth story.
How the Jesuit Mission Began in Nallapadu
The Jesuit presence in Nallapadu emerged as a response to the quiet but growing vulnerability created by rapid urban expansion.
As Guntur city expanded, new settlements formed without adequate infrastructure or services. The mission chose to be present among these families, establishing a parish community that would provide stability, belonging, and accompaniment in a constantly shifting environment.
From the beginning, the focus was not on large programmes, but on consistent presence and pastoral care.
What we have done
The mission in Nallapadu focused on building a parish rooted in everyday life.
Through regular worship, family visits, faith formation, and counselling, the parish became a trusted space for families facing uncertainty. Children and youth were supported to stay connected to education and positive community spaces, even as migration disrupted normal routines.
What is happening today
Today, Nallapadu Parish continues to serve as a stable anchor for migrant and low-income families.
