Walking With Working Families in a Town of Labour and Resilience

Sircilla

Where is Sircilla — and why it matters

Sircilla is a town in northern Telangana, widely known for its handloom and textile industry. For generations, the looms of Sircilla have sustained thousands of families — weavers, dyers, helpers, and small traders — whose lives are deeply tied to daily labour and fluctuating markets.

Despite this rich tradition of work, many families live with economic insecurity, debt, health stress, and uncertain futures for their children. Long working hours, irregular income, and lack of social protection place constant pressure on households. For young people growing up here, opportunities beyond traditional livelihoods are limited and often unclear.

Sircilla matters because it represents working-class communities where hard work alone does not guarantee stability or dignity — and where steady accompaniment can make a decisive difference.

How the Jesuit Mission Began in Sircilla

The Jesuit presence in Sircilla emerged as a pastoral response to the everyday struggles of labouring families.

Rather than approaching the town through large institutions, the mission took shape through parish-based presence and close engagement with families whose lives were shaped by work, vulnerability, and resilience.

The aim from the beginning was simple and grounded:
to be present with people, to listen, and to support faith and dignity amid demanding daily realities.

What we have done

The mission in Sircilla focused on building a parish rooted in people’s lived experience.

Through regular worship, family visits, counselling, and faith formation, the parish became a space where working families could find reassurance, solidarity, and moral strength. Special attention was given to children and youth from weaver households, helping them stay connected to education and positive community spaces.

Faith here was nurtured not as escape, but as strength for everyday life.

What is happening today

Today, the Sircilla mission continues to serve as a steady pastoral presence among working-class families.

  • Families receive accompaniment during illness, financial stress, and crisis

  • Children and youth are supported through guidance and formation

  • Community bonds are strengthened through parish life and shared faith

  • The parish remains a place of trust and belonging

In a town shaped by economic uncertainty, this presence remains essential.
